Bang & Olufsen celebrates 56 years of Television Making

KUALA LUMPUR, 26 August 2008 - In conjunction with the 56th year of television making, Bang & Olufsen introduces its new revolutionary technology in plasma televisions- the Automatic Colour Management technology.

With the invention and patenting of Automatic Colour Management, Bang & Olufsen reemphasizes the commitment in producing products with longer product lifecycles.

Like everything else, plasma screen technology is subject to the effects of aging. The phosphor lining inside each cell or pixels degrades slowly over time. This affects the quality and consequently, the picture becomes dull and unattractive. The phosphor decline cannot be checked or repaired. Instead of putting the old television aside and getting a newer and better television, Bang & Olufsen developed this breakthrough Automatic Colour Management (ACM) technology that allows the constant management and correction of aging screens.

Upon activation, a short robot arm, anchored behind the upper part of the aluminum frame, tilts downwards over the screen. At the end of the arm is a camera eye. A test picture is shown on the screen, and the camera films the screen. The colour temperature in light and dark pictures is analyzed and adjusted to ensure consistent colour reproduction, even after thousands of hours of use.

The analysis and adjustment takes only a few seconds. It can be activated via an on-screen menu at any time, but is also preset from the factory to be activated in usage intervals of 100 hours. When the 100-hour mark passes, Automatic Colour Management is delayed until you have pressed the standby button on the remote control. The procedure is then performed before the television switches to standby.

There are two reasons for this: First, we do not want to interrupt the viewing experience. Second, waiting until the standby button is pressed ensures that the procedure occurs at the best possible time: when the screen has been ‘warmed up’.

Comments Kenneth Wong, “Bang & Olufsen has once again proven to be frontrunners in the field of picture technology, ensuring a longer product life cycle than the competition, and thereby providing our customers with long-lasting experiences of perfect colours”.

Automatic Colour Management has all the hallmarks of a proprietary Bang & Olufsen technology; it is intelligent, easy to use, and elegantly integrated into the BeoVision 4 plasma TV.
